The Vatican announced that the new Pope was elected after a white smoke from the chimney at the top of the Sistine Chapel emerged on Thursday. The elections that took place on the second day of the vote were an important moment for 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.
133 cardinals who participated in the Conclave reached a decision. The identity of the new Pope, however, remains under the wrap until it is from the balcony of St. Petr Basilica issues a traditional announcement.
Crowd on St. Peter exploded in health because white smoke signaled that the selected candidate was provided by at least 89 votes or two -thirds.
The official name of the new Pope will be revealed when the cardinal forwards forward to announce the words “Habemus papam!” (We have the Pope!) And read the birth name of the winner in Latin, along with the name that the new Pope decided to know.
Crowd on St. Peter included school groups, pilgrims and media crews from around the world.
First vote
The conclave was opened on Wednesday afternoon with the theater display of red Cassocks, Latin chanting and Swiss guards before the Sistine Chapel’s doors were sealed. That night, black smoke emerged from the chimney just after 21 hours, which raised questions about the delay.
Vote
The conclave is followed by a carefully prescribed process. Each cardinal writes the name of its elected candidate for a ballot marked with the words “Eligo in Summen Pontific” – “I vote as the highest Pope.” The Cardinal swears in front of God and places his ballot in silver and gold urn.
Three cardinals, chosen randomly, are used as memorized. They open up and read the ballots out loud, each piercing with a needle with the word “Eligo” and their fibers. The results are verified, recorded and then burned with chemicals to create smoke signals that warn the world.
Reflector on the upper candidates
The centuries old ritual began on Wednesday afternoon with a striking manifestation of tradition: Cardinals in Red Kassoks, Swiss Guards in Attention and Latin Prayers, followed by the dramatic closing of Sixtine Chapel.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, 70 years, state secretary of the state, led the proceedings as the highest cardinal under 80. His name was prominently on the papal narrower lists.
