Following reports that the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government regarding the appointment of a Director General of Police (DGP), AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday urged the DMK government to name one of the names on the list proposed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
“I call for the immediate appointment of a senior officer from the list sent by the UPSC as DGP to maintain law and order and ensure independent functioning of the police force,” he said in a statement.
Mr Palaniswami alleged that Chief Minister MK Stalin “deliberately appointed an interim DGP to delay the appointment of the DGP” as the UPSC did not recommend junior officers who were likely to act at the behest of the DMK government as many eligible senior police officers were waiting.
“Even after the case was referred to the Supreme Court for non-appointment of DGP in Tamil Nadu, no action was taken by this government. So on 7 November 2025, a contempt petition was filed against the DMK government for not implementing the Supreme Court’s order. The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government, returnable in three weeks.”
Enumerating several cases of crimes reported in different parts of the state, Mr. Palaniswami claimed, “We could go on to list more such incidents. Looking at the deteriorating law and order situation and the compromises in women’s safety, it only shows that the perpetrators have no fear of the rule of law or the police force.”
Mr. Palaniswami charged that the law and order situation in the state was deteriorating under the DMK government and recalled that the police force was effective under the former AIADMK regime. “During the last 54 months, the police have lost respect under the DMK government. He alleged that people were suffering under the “evil force” in the DMK government.
Alleging that the DMK government has allegedly failed on all fronts during the last four-and-a-half years, Mr. Palaniswami said, “People would not tolerate the failure of the law and order situation. The people of Tamil Nadu would not accept that Mr. Stalin, who took office to uphold the Constitution, is running the government for his own welfare.”
