Local MLA and Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka appealed to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to take steps to revive the Lakshmipuram lift irrigation scheme and to construct a new lift irrigation project on the right bank of the Godavari river.
During the chief minister’s visit to the Devadula project in the district on Sunday, the minister submitted a formal memorandum highlighting the urgent irrigation needs of farmers in Kannaigudem mandal and surrounding areas. She noted that the Lakshmipuram lift irrigation system, completed in 2007, has lapsed over the years due to changes in the flow of the Godavari and heavy sand deposition, rendering it unusable.
Ms. Seethakka suggested the revival of the existing system along with a new lift scheme using the backwaters of the Sammakka Sagar (Tupakulagudem) project on the main regulator. According to the plan prepared by the ministry, the two initiatives would together help stabilize irrigation of 921 acres across the villages. The estimated cost of the new project is ₹22 crore.
