The Minister of Union Agriculture Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the Union’s government has reviewed the progress of the ongoing period of crops Kharif and the country has sufficient seeds and fertilizers to meet the requirements of farmers. When he spoke to reporters after the National Agriculture Conference for the Kharif campaign, which took place on Thursday, he said that the meeting appreciated the decision to cancel the Indus water agreement and said it would benefit farmers in India.
Mr. Singh said that the area of growing unpeeled within 40.73 million hectares during the Kharif 2023-24 and in 2024-25 increased to 43.42 million hectares. “The production of rice was in Kharif 2023-24 113.26 million tonnes, which increased to 120.68 million tonnes in the Kharif 2024-25,” he said. In the case of corn, cultivation was at 8.33 million hectares in Kharif 2023-24, which in 2024-25 increased to 8.44 million hectares. Corn production was 22.25 million tonnes in 2023-24 and increased to 24.81 million tonnes in 2024-25.
He said that the total grain area of food increased by 3.8%compared to last year, with a large increase in rice and corn. The total production of food grain in Kharif 2024 increased by 6.81%compared to last year’s production. “Despite unfavorable climatic conditions, our food production is constantly increasing. The second estimate of the Rabi season is also very promising,” he said.
Previously, when he addressed at the conference, he said that the signature of the Indus Water in 1960 was a historical mistake. “It was the disaster of the country and its farmers that 80% of the water of the river flowing through our country had to be given Pakistan. We have now abolished this contract after Pahalgam’s terrorist attacks. Our farmers have the right to the Indus River.
He added that the seed requirement for this kharif is 164.254 Lakh Quinttal and the ground has enough seeds of 178.48 Lakh Quinttal. “We will be able to provide improved seeds according to the demand of all states,” he said, adding that for farmers, adequate arrangements were made for fertilizers such as urea, phosphate ammonium (n), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).
