Security will be beefed up in and around the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for the final day of the Ranji Trophy Group D match between Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir following a high-intensity blast near the Red Fort, which is just kilometers from the stadium.
At least 10 people were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion rocked Delhi’s Red Fort area on Monday night. Officials said the explosion, which sparked fires in several vehicles nearby, occurred when the car slowed down and stopped at a red light near Gate 1 of the Red Fort metro station.
After the incident, security was tightened around the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. “Security will be beefed up near the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium) on the final day of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. I will approach the Delhi Police authorities and request them to deploy additional security outside the stadium premises,” Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.
Chasing a target of 179 in the fourth innings, Jammu & Kashmir still need 124 runs to win the match. They finished Day 3 at 55/2 at stumps with Qamran Iqbal (32*) and Vanshaj Sharma (0*) at the crease.
Meanwhile, the exact cause of the explosion near Red Fort is still under investigation, the incident came just hours after police dismantled an interstate terror cell linked to the banned outfit and seized over 2,900 kilograms of suspected ammonium nitrate – a key ingredient used in making explosives. Officials said the module planned to unleash large-scale terror in Delhi using hundreds of powerful IEDs made from seized material.
However, police sources clarified that Monday’s blast near Red Fort not related to an earlier arrest in Faridabad related to procuring bomb-making material.
