A week after Central Reserve Police Force Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh advised personnel deployed in Manipur to neutralize miscreants roaming in civilian areas with weapons, state Director General of Police Mukesh Singh said security forces would retaliate if attacked with weapons.

Warning individuals with firearms and trying to incite riots, the DGP said that those people who fire at security forces will face strict action in self-defence.

“Anyone with arms who tries to take the law into their own hands will be dealt with very severely. Those with arms will be arrested and those who fire at us will be dealt with in self-defence,” he told reporters in Churachandpur after his first visit to the Kuki-Zo-controlled district on Saturday (June 13, 2026).

The DGP said security forces have so far recovered about 70% of the weapons seized during the initial days of ethnic violence in Manipur. The conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people erupted on May 3, 2023 and within months claimed more than 260 lives and displaced about 62,000 people.

He also said police are monitoring online platforms and taking action against individuals and groups spreading misinformation that could incite ethnic tensions. “Our social media monitoring cell is looking into such cases,” he said.

The DGP further said that coordinated operations against armed groups and illegal activities will continue as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in Manipur.

Manipur CM on state’s growth under PM Modi

Manipur has been on a growth path during the continued tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi despite losing three years to ethnic conflicts, Chief Minister Yumnan Khemchand Singh told reporters in Imphal on Sunday (Jun 14, 2026).

The Chief Minister said Manipur has benefited from major initiatives in infrastructure, education, healthcare, sports, connectivity and social welfare, which have contributed significantly to the development and growth of the state during Mr. Modi’s 12 years in office.

As examples of the Prime Minister’s focus on Manipur, he highlighted the establishment of the National Sports University, the first of its kind in India, and the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (a British-era temporary travel document for non-residents).

Among the other projects he highlighted were the establishment of a medical college in Churachandpur district and the drive to complete the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway project by 2028.
