Seaweed production in India has increased nearly threefold in the last decade, from 18,890 tonnes in 2015 to 74,083 tonnes in 2024, Fisheries Minister George Kurian said here on Thursday.
He delivered the inaugural address online at the 7th India International Seaweed Expo and Summit at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). India is poised for a major expansion of seaweed farming and seaweed-based industries, with the sector identified as a key driver of sustainable livelihoods and coastal development, it said in a report issued here.
He said seaweed has been included as an output component under PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana which covers 100 aspirational areas across the country. Kerala, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts have been selected under this initiative, he said. The two-day event is jointly organized by Indian Chamber of Commerce, CMFRI and Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), according to a report.
