The Department of Radiology, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) organized a mid-term conference on ‘Fundamentals of Advances in Breast Imaging’ at the SVIMS campus on Sunday. Speakers at the event emphasized that early diagnosis and preventive intervention are key to curbing the spread of cancer.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Breast Imaging Society of India (BISI) and was followed by a hands-on workshop on basic interventions, conducted on the ultrasound block.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board member and Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy highlighted the state government’s commitment to curb cancer, especially among women, by organizing special screening camps in rural areas.
Ms. Prashanthi Reddy, who is also a member of SVIMS Executive Council, recalled that when her family foundation VPR conducted cancer camps in Kovur constituency, as many as 15,000 women were screened and nearly 10% of them were found to be suffering from cancer.
Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Chairman Dr. D. Sreehari Rao, who is also the state president of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), expressed concern over the rising cases of cancer among women and stressed the need for early intervention.
Director and Vice-Chancellor of SVIMS Dr. RV Kumar said that the radiology department of the institute is fully equipped to diagnose, screen and treat breast cancer cases. “Our breast surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and other health professionals are leaving no stone unturned to create awareness among women,” he added.
Chairman of the organization and head of radiology Dr. B. Vijayalakshmi urged the women to make use of state-of-the-art facilities like Mammogram, Ultrasonography, Breast MRI and Pet-CT available at SVIMS.
As many as 200 delegates from all over Andhra Pradesh participated. The dean Dr. Alok Sachan, Organizing Secretary Dr. Shilpa Kadiyala and others.
