The South Central Railway (SCR) arranged a special train for 1,226 passengers stranded in Kazipet with Cyclone Murasu disrupting rail services in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

While many train services were cancelled, diverted or rescheduled as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers amid adverse weather conditions caused by the cyclonic storm, four long-distance trains — Jogbani-Erode Amrit Bharat Express, Indore-Kochuveli Ahilya Nagari Express, Hazrat Nizamuddin-MGR Chennai Central Garib Chennai Central Garib Chennai Express Central Express — were diverted via Kazipet, bypassing their scheduled route via Vijayawada.

This resulted in 1,226 passengers alighting at Kazipet, with the Secunderabad division accommodating 278 passengers on the Secunderabad-Guntur Golconda Express and running a special train from Kazipet to Vijayawada for the remaining 948 passengers. Special catering services were provided at Warangal, Ramagundam and Jammikunta stations for food and refreshments during extended halts.

Another measure was an unscheduled halt at Kurnool City station for the diverted Thiruvananthapuram-Hazrat Nizamuddin special train, allowing passengers to use the catering facilities.

Railway officials said ticket inspectors have been deployed to guide passengers, answer queries and facilitate onward travel. General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava praised the railway staff for their quick response and passenger-centric measures. As the cyclone is expected to continue to affect the region, night patrolling has been stepped up and additional watchmen have been deployed on vulnerable bridges to closely monitor water levels and ensure safety, he said.

Retirement camps

SCR organized a mega camp to promote the welfare of pensioners and family pensioners at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad on Wednesday as part of the state-wide Digital Life Campaign 5.0. The aim of the camp was to create awareness about online submission of Digital Life Certificates (DLC) and address grievances raised by retired railway employees.

Chief Personnel Officer Siddarth Kati, Chief Personnel Officer (Industrial Relations) S. Ramana Reddy and other senior officials attended the programme. Similar camps were also organized in Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Nanded divisions. According to a press release, a large number of retired railway employees participated in the camps and interacted with the railway officials regarding the online application process, pension related issues and other queries.
