Scout Motors, an iconic American off-road vehicle brand from the 1960s, has been revitalized under Volkswagen Group’s ownership, marking a significant return with a modern electric twist. The brand’s revival aims to blend its rugged heritage with contemporary electric vehicle (EV) technology, catering to both nostalgic enthusiasts and new-age adventurers.
Unveiling of the Terra and Traveler Models
On October 24, 2024, Scout Motors introduced two production-intent concepts: the Terra pickup truck and the Traveler SUV. Both models showcase a retro-inspired design reminiscent of the original Scout vehicles, featuring boxy aesthetics and robust structures. Built on a body-on-frame chassis with a solid rear axle and locking differentials, these vehicles are engineered for serious off-road capabilities.
Performance and Capabilities
The Terra and Traveler are equipped with electric powertrains delivering up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.5 seconds. The Traveler SUV offers a towing capacity exceeding 7,000 pounds, while the Terra pickup boasts a towing capacity over 10,000 pounds and a payload capacity nearing 2,000 pounds. Both models are designed to ford nearly three feet of water and handle challenging terrains, emphasizing their off-road prowess.
Range and Charging Options
Scout Motors plans to offer both fully electric and range-extended versions of these vehicles. The all-electric models aim for a range of up to 350 miles on a single charge, supported by an 800V electrical architecture and 350kW rapid charging capabilities. For those concerned about range limitations, the range-extended variants, utilizing Scout’s proprietary ‘Harvester’ system, are expected to provide over 500 miles of travel by incorporating a gasoline-powered generator to recharge the battery.
Interior and User Experience
Emphasizing a tactile and mechanical user experience, Scout Motors has incorporated physical features such as door handles, grab bars, switches, and dials, creating a hands-on interaction often missing in modern EVs. This approach, dubbed the “Connection Machine,” blends heritage with modern technology, offering a unique driving experience.
Production and Market Strategy
Production for the Terra and Traveler models is slated to commence in late 2027, with an anticipated starting price of around $60,000 for each vehicle. Scout Motors has adopted a direct-to-consumer sales model, bypassing traditional dealerships, a strategy that has sparked discussions within the automotive industry.
By resurrecting the Scout brand with a focus on electric mobility, Volkswagen aims to capture the growing interest in EVs while honoring the legacy of a classic American off-road icon.
