Schools open today and a delicious breakfast awaits students

Government schools across Telangana will reopen today after the extended summer vacation, with thousands of students returning to classes with a hearty breakfast and milk.

This year’s reopening has been delayed by several days due to intense heatwave conditions across the state, but adding to the excitement is the government’s ambitious breakfast programme, which will provide nutritious morning meals and milk.

All arrangements for the breakfast program have been completed, with the first phase covering 1,302 educational institutions, including 1,269 schools and 33 government junior schools.

As part of the program, a total of 1.44 million students will be provided with a nutritious breakfast six days a week. During the current academic year, it will be gradually extended to all government schools and junior colleges through a network of centralized kitchens.

Two voluntary organizations, Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Trust and Manna Trust, will implement the breakfast program in the first phase in eight districts.

The Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Trust will provide breakfast to 1.03 lakh students studying in 1,162 government schools in six districts. Besides, 10,000 students enrolled in 21 government high schools in four districts will also receive breakfast under the scheme.

Manna Trust will serve breakfast to more than 26,000 students studying in 107 government schools in Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts. The scheme will also benefit 4000 odd students in 12 government high schools in the two districts.

Junior colleges were included in the catering system for the first time. It will be launched in 33 government junior high schools from Monday. Telangana has 430 government high schools with nearly 1.7 lakh students enrolled.

The breakfast program will ultimately benefit nearly 22,000 students. The government has allocated ₹720 million annually for this scheme, including ₹540 million for breakfast and ₹180 million for milk distribution. Another ₹56 crore was allocated specifically for intermediate students.

As part of the nutrition plan, students will be served milk for three days a week and ragi java for the remaining three days. The menu will vary throughout the week, consisting of dosas, millet idlis, puris, bondas and upma along with chutney or sambar.
