The functioning of school protection groups (SPGS) in Kozhikode was strengthened as part of an intensified supervision against anti -společný elements and drug pedlers near educational institutions. The coordinators from 173 schools will directly oversee the initiative, which was opened by the Social Police division of the Kozhikode Municipal Police in 2011 as the first defensive line.
“We recently organized a meeting of all SPG coordinators at the district level to explain the reasons for intensified monitoring measures. By strengthening SPG in 173 schools, we will be able to add another layer of safety for our students,” says Uuresh, assistant of the sub-inspector and project coordinator. He adds that the initiative is now active in all governments, supported, unused and private schools, according to the Social Police Division.
SPGs, operating under the heads of institutions, include, in particular, students ‘representatives, nominated for the Association of Parents and Members of the Community from various sectors who can carefully follow the students’ movement and those who often interact with them. Station officers will also review the activities of each group and issue the necessary instructions.
“The presence of community members, such as auto-riksh and head workers, makes the SPGS a strong platform for the police to collect accurate information about the issues and the ranking of students. The initiative now includes students from higher primary to higher secondary levels,” says Mr. Umesh. He adds that all 17 police stations in Kozhikode City work closely with SPG units to ensure a quick action.
SPG coordinators from different city schools confirm that active members from different sectors will be listed to ensure the full functioning of groups in accordance with the Social Police Division. Given that the initiative is part of the State Police Program for Students, the Ministry of Education also wants to monitor its implementation and results at the school level, they add.
