In 1886, a group of missionaries from Scotland founded a school in Mylapore to educate poor girls in the neighborhood. Five women – Laura Jackson, Teale, Ruth Gordon, Schebhert and Joe Walford – have come together to create a residential school that educated girls from Mylapor. They were looking for a suitable place. The premises where the school stands were known as the Sullivan Gardens, the residence of Benjamin Sullivan, who lived there in the 80s of the 20th century. He was credited to him that he was the “originator” of the general prosecutor of the post office Madras, who later became a judge.
In 1840, Madras acquired the Diocese of the Society for the spread of the Gospel in foreign parts. The women’s dream materialized when Sullivan’s gardens on Dr. Radhakrishhnan Salai came to their rescue in 1886. The school derived its name from St. EBBA, daughters of King Northumbria. Plaque at the school entry gives the details of St. EBBA. She lived in 7 NL and became a Scottish saint.
In 1903, the school was upgraded as a secondary school with sponsorship from children of Telugu origin. In 1913 a new building came to serve as a hostel for students and teachers. Soon after, St. Ebba’s admit to the boy in the primary section. Practice continues today.
During the Second World War, the school was taken over for the soldiers and was moved to Namakkal. “Until the Covid-19 pandemic, the strength of the school was around 1,000. However, it has been decreasing in the last four years,” says Shanti Christian, correspondent of the school. The helpful school offers a lunch memorial scheme, but after the government began to supply breakfast, students preferred government schools, he says. The government scheme of admission to professional courses through a preferential reservation for government school students also influenced admission.
The school authorities tried hard to screen in neighboring areas. Currently, the strength of the school is 550. The correspondent says the school has developed two intelligent classrooms. The authorities applied for the Ministry of Education for permission to expand the current of co-educational up to class VIII. “Our playground is envy of schools in the city,” adds Hepsi’s main Roman.
The playground gave girls an advantage over those other schools at sports events. The school has teams for hockey, football and handball. Some girls showed a promise in athletics. One student gained bronze on the national box. Students also teach Kung Fu and Silambam.
