Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) recorded a significant increase in coal transportation during the first half of the current financial year ended September 30, supplying more coal to consumers and thermal power plants across Telangana.
SCCL transported 299.4 lakh tonnes of coal during the first six months of the current financial year compared to 287.6 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 4%.
In keeping with its focus on meeting the state’s energy needs, SCCL supplied 198.2 million tonnes of coal to Telangana’s thermal power plants, an increase of 24.58% over the 159.1 million tonnes supplied in the same period last year.
Among power plants, coal supply for Kothagudem Thermal Power Plant increased from 26.4 million tonnes to 39.8 million tonnes, an increase of 50.76%. The supply to Yadadri thermal plant increased by 57.67% from 21.5 million tonnes to 33.9 million tonnes, while Bhadradri thermal plant received 24.4 million tonnes, up 25.13% from 19.5 million tonnes last year.
Coal shipment to Singareni thermal power plant was 26.6 million tonnes, an increase of 27.27%. Deliveries to NTPC Telangana increased from 19.4 million tonnes to 25.3 million tonnes. However, coal deliveries to NTPC Ramagundam fell marginally to 42.7 million tonnes from 43.5 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.
SCCL attributed the increased supply to special measures taken in view of the El Nino conditions and the need to ensure uninterrupted power generation in Telangana. Based on the directions of the state and central governments, the company has been coordinating closely with power sector agencies to promote coal production and transportation.
Chairman of the Board and CEO of SCCL Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti reviews production and transportation targets with regional general managers on a daily basis, while five senior officials have been tasked with monitoring the movement of coal to thermal plants.
Dr. Jyoti said that SCCL considers meeting the energy requirements of Telangana as a responsibility beyond commercial considerations and is working in a planned manner to achieve its annual targets of 620 million tonnes of coal production and 650 million tonnes of coal transportation.
