District Medical Officer (DMO) TK Jayanthy has issued a warning against diagnostic labs and scanning centers offering prenatal sex determination in Malappuram.
Dr. Jayanthy said prenatal sex determination was a criminal offense and strict action would be taken against institutions violating the restriction.
Dr. Jayanthy said special training in prenatal sex determination would be given to scan center operators.
As many as eight scanning centers were authorized in the district on Tuesday. Newly registered scanning centers will receive special training, she said.
The DMO said posters and notice boards would be put up at various places to create awareness about prenatal sex determination.
Various aspects of the management of the scanning center were reviewed in a meeting held here on Tuesday. The DMO has warned the scanning centers that only qualified doctors are authorized to operate such centres.
She asked people not to open scanning centers without proper registration, for which the district health authorities should be approached.
District reproductive and child health (RCH) officer NN Pameeli, social workers Beena Sunny and Sujata Varma and district education officer KP Sadikali were among those who attended the meeting.
