BC Reservation The Sadhana Samakhya Joint Action Committee (JAC) has condemned the Supreme Court’s verdict quashing the state government’s petition for 42% reservation for BC, calling it a “serious blow to social justice”.
National President Dundra Kumaraswamy said “the judgment is against the constitutional spirit of social justice. It tramples on the rights of BCs who have historically been marginalized. This is not just a fight for reservations – it is a movement for dignity and self-respect.”
Addressing the media, the JAC referred to the recent SC ruling on Governor’s assent to bills: “If the Governor does not act within the stipulated time, the bill is deemed to have received assent. The same principle should apply to the BC Telangana Reservation Act.”
Regarding the 50% cap on reservations and its legality, they pointed out that the SC itself has clarified that the 50% limit can be exceeded if there is adequate empirical data to justify it. And in Telangana, BCs form a sizeable population.
JAC leaders also compared the situation in Telangana with that in Tamil Nadu. “Just as Tamil Nadu increased its reservation limits through a constitutional amendment and inclusion in the Ninth Plan, the Center must now amend the constitution to include BC reservation. Only then will real social justice be achieved.”
The JAC called for a nationwide bandh on Saturday, calling it a “battle for equality and dignity”, appealing for peaceful participation.
OU postpones exams
Observing the bandh, Osmania University said it is postponing all examinations scheduled for Saturday. New exam schedule will be communicated.
OU Backward Classes Professors Forum expressed solidarity with Telangana BC JAC for demanding 42% reservation for them. The forum has called upon all its members from the campus and institutes to assemble outside the University’s Academy of Arts and Social Sciences at 10:30 am.
