Stating that expressways must not become dangerous corridors due to administrative lethargy or infrastructural deficiencies, the Supreme Court issued a series of all-India directions to improve road safety, including a ban on parking of heavy vehicles on such roads.
Justice JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar pointed out that national highways constitute 2% of the total length of Indian roads but account for nearly 30% of all road deaths.
