KHAMMAM
Ahead of next month’s Gram Panchayat elections, an overwhelming majority of villagers from Jogugud in Kamepalli mandal of Khammam district have reportedly decided to ensure the unanimous election of a candidate as their Sarpanch after he “offered” to spend ₹20 lakh on temple construction and development works.
According to unconfirmed reports, a resolution to this effect was unanimously adopted at a meeting in the municipality on Friday.
About seven aspirants showed interest for the post of Sarpanch, but one of them unanimously opted for the meeting participants as he offered to provide funds for the development of the village, sources added.
Social media was abuzz with reports referring to it as a “contribution auction”, which locals rejected.
There has been no such incident so far, said an official who is part of a designated team tasked with checking violations of the model code of conduct for GP elections.
“We will look into the matter and take appropriate steps to ensure free and fair elections,” he added.
The municipality is going to the polls next month in the second phase of GP elections and nominations are expected to start on November 30.
