‘Salary stuck in 2006, rent in 2046′: Bengaluru residents’ rant about housing costs goes viral | Today’s news

Bengaluru’s skyrocketing housing rents have once again become a battle of opinion on social media, with a corporate employee venting his frustration over low pay while Silicon City rents continue to rise. The employee claimed that landlords were demanding exorbitant rents from tenants and did not realize that private sector wages had been stagnant for years.

“Private sector salaries appeared to be “beautifully preserved from 20 years ago,” he said.

The resident then highlighted the “absolute mathematical comedy” between corporate salaries and rental prices in areas such as New Thippasandra and Indiranagar.

“We recently audited our monthly expenses and discovered a hilarious structural flaw: The private sector is paying us a salary that seems beautifully preserved from 20 years ago. It’s a wonderful, nostalgic throwback to the days of the early IT centers. Meanwhile, independent homeowners are holding a calculator and demanding rent that lives 20 years straight into the future,” OP wrote.

“It’s an incredible economic time machine”

According to a Reddit user, a 1BHK rental in this area can cost between ₹22,000 a ₹24,000 per month with landlords asking for a security deposit of around ₹1.5 million. The user described the property as a second floor walk-up in a building that is over 15 years old. Limited access to water, which municipal authorities supply only at a fixed time, was also identified as the main deficiency.

“It’s an incredible economic time machine,” he wrote, adding that companies compensate employees “like it’s the past,” landlords bill “like it’s the future,” while municipal infrastructure still runs on “basic legacy software from the 1990s.”

How social media users reacted:

Post titled “Salary Stuck in 2006, But Rent in Bengaluru Lives in 2046. Anyone else trapped in this time paradox?” went viral and garnered numerous reactions, with several users expressing similar concerns about the rising cost of living.

“Don’t forget the definition of 1BHK, 1RK from these landlords and brokers….A small granite slab in one corner is called as kitchen here. They will ask you 1 month rent for painting and all. But none of them have given me a freshly painted flat on rent till date…the pretend hypocrisy,” the user wrote.

“I agree….Bangalore needs rent control at this point, once people and companies start moving out of Bangalore they will understand the consequences and it’s high time it happened,” commented another.
