Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Friday urged citizens to actively participate in spreading awareness about cyber crimes so that people do not fall victim to online scams.
Speaking at the ‘Cyber Simba’ volunteer orientation program held at the TGICCC auditorium in Banjara Hills, the commissioner said public participation is essential to curb cyber crime and protect people from fraudulent schemes run by cybercriminals. The voluntary initiative ‘Cyber Simba’ was launched as part of the ‘Jagrut Hyderabad Surakshit Hyderabad’ campaign to promote cyber security. Officials said the program encourages volunteers to spread cyber-fraud awareness and preventative measures in their communities.
The commissioner said that 1,717 volunteers had registered for the program since its launch in November last year and that outreach activities carried out through 5,118 door-to-door programs had reached about two million people. He urged people to use social media and messaging platforms to spread cyber security awareness instead of limiting it to casual greetings.
The commissioner said the first hour after a cybercrime was crucial, describing it as the “golden hour” and urged victims to report incidents immediately via the 1930 helpline to improve the chances of recovering lost money. He also said that the ‘C Mitra’ service has been introduced to enable victims to file complaints from home without visiting the police station. According to officials, the number of daily complaints has come down from around 80 to 60 following increased awareness efforts.
