Sailor from Kasaragod killed in attack on cargo ship off Ukraine

A 26-year-old merchant marine from Kerala was reportedly killed in a Russian attack on a cargo ship off the Ukrainian coast of Odessa, according to information received by his family on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Akhil Joyan, 26, of AKG Nagar, Vellarikundu, Kasaragod district. He was the only son of Joyan and Sally of Valiplackal House.

According to preliminary information received by the family, Akhil died in an explosion on board the cargo ship on which he was serving. The shipping company notified the family of his death by email Monday afternoon. Additional details about the incident were not immediately available.

According to initial reports, about 10 crew members were killed in the attack, while eight others were rescued by Ukrainian authorities.

The vessel, identified as the Golden Leo, was reportedly carrying grain when it was attacked. Indian and Syrian nationals were on board.

Akhil joined the merchant marine at the age of 19. In addition to his naval career, he earned recognition as a world record holder in tug-of-war, a discipline related to tug-of-war. He excelled in tug-of-war competitions since his school days.

Akhil recently returned to Kerala for a vacation during which his marriage was repaired. He returned to duty a month ago. The tragedy occurred when his family was preparing for a wedding.

The news of his death quickly spread across Vellarikund, relatives, friends and locals gathered at his house to console the bereaved family.

Following reports that a Keralite was killed in the attack, the Chief Minister’s office launched a fact-finding effort. He directed NORKA Roots to coordinate with the Russian Consulate and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain official details of the incident.

Further steps, including arrangements to repatriate Akhil’s remains, are expected to be taken after official confirmation and further information is received.

Meanwhile, the Kasaragod district administration said it has not yet received any official information about the incident.
