Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar reviewed the revenue and road safety aspects of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) with senior officials in a review meeting on Thursday.
The minister has issued instructions to officials to improve monitoring of drivers and draw up plans for depots that are in “losses”. Depots operating at a loss, including those at Tandur, Vikarabad, BHEL, Miyapur, Kushaiguda, Dilsukhnagar and Hakimpet, will be reviewed by a special committee to identify local problems and suggest remedial measures. Officials have been issued instructions to expand the network in line with the increase in demand in newer areas.
As part of security measures, TGSRTC will introduce driver monitoring system in Lahari, Rajdhani and Garuda buses in the first phase. In parallel, he will enforce the two-driver rule on chartered buses. In addition, regular medical tests and ongoing training and awareness programs will be initiated.
Mr. Prabhakar pointed out that virtual interaction with drivers, conductors and other employees across the state will be organized soon. The meeting will discuss safety and operational problem solving. Emphasis will be placed on reducing traffic accidents.
At Thursday’s meeting, measures to improve the RTC’s financial position were discussed at length. As thousands of women have benefited from the Mahalakshmi scheme, the reimbursement from the government has improved the income to some extent. However, there was a need to increase revenue from and beyond tickets. Ways to achieve this were explored at the meeting.
Infrastructure for 2,000 electric buses under the PM E-Drive scheme was also considered. While 3,490 buses were deployed during last year’s Medaram jatara, this year it is planned to increase it to 3,800 to facilitate the travel of 20 lakh passengers.
