Safeguards were sought against the abuse of menstrual leave in schools

A district health official urged the government to ensure that menstrual leave for schoolgirls is not misused and that the privacy of female students is protected.

K. Prathibha, a doctor from Tanur known for her interventions in public affairs, has written to Chief Minister VD Satheesan for strict guidelines and mandatory medical certification for students availing menstrual leave.

In her letter, Dr Prathibha said that schoolgirls who have serious physical or mental problems during menstruation should be given leave on the basis of an annual certificate issued by a government medical officer. She also suggested that requests for menstrual leave be handled by a teacher.

“If the class teacher, principal or principal is male, a female teacher should be appointed as the nodal officer to oversee the decision on menstrual leave,” she said.

Dr. Prathibha said safeguards were needed to prevent misuse of the provisions. Students who can attend classes without much discomfort don’t need a leave, she said. “Unfettered access to menstrual leave could lead to abuse and related problems,” she warned.

Dr. Prathibha also urged schools to ensure that female students on menstrual leave remain in the care of their parents or guardians during the absence.
