Sachivalayam workers organize ‘Chalo Vijayawada’, a stage protest at Dharna Chowk

Workers of Swarna Grama and Ward Sachivalayams staged a protest at Dharna Chowk in Vijayawada on Sunday (September 27, 2026) demanding that the government address their demands.

Despite the police warning, thousands of employees working in Swarna Grama and Ward Sachivalayams organized ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ to increase pressure on the government. The sachivalayam employees, affiliated to various ministries, demanded the government to grant two notional increments, announce a permanent promotion structure, pay salary allowances and other demands.

Although the leaders of the sachivayalam employees’ association had given an advance notice of ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ on September 27, the government did not invite the employees to the meeting and tried to suppress the protest, they alleged.

“The police have announced that protests are banned and action will be taken against those violating the orders and keeping the sachialajam employees under house arrest,” protester Kumar said.

“The government, which was using Sachivalayam employees to complete SIRs, distribute pensions every month and conduct many surveys, was providing stepmother care to the employees,” the protesters alleged.

Though the government tried to stop the Sachivalayam employees and used police force, many employees from various districts participated in the ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ and raised their voice, the leaders said.

Police personnel deployed at bus stands and railway stations, BRTS Road, Dharna Chowk and Lenin Center and prevented the Sachivalayam staff from organizing the protest. Several protesters were taken into preventive custody and moved to different locations, the staff said, adding that some staff were injured during the protest.

The workers criticized the government for using the police to quell the agitation instead of addressing their long-pending demands.
