Police officer Saba Shawl is set to take over as the first Kashmiri female warden at Srinagar’s Central Jail. The facility houses at least 509 inmates.
Ms. Shawl has already served in the administrative department at the Central Jail in Kot Balwal, Jammu and Kupwara Jail.
A resident of Srinagar’s Peerbagh, Ms. Shawl qualified the J&K Public Service Commission examination in 2012 for the post of Superintendent of Police (Prisons). She has a Master’s Degree in Social Work and was employed as a Senior Community Development Consultant at the Government Polytechnic for Women, Bemina.
Officials said Ms. Shawl created correctional policies for inmates and advocated for recreational programs in prisons.
Local residents have welcomed the move to appoint a female officer to head the Srinagar Central Jail.
