A program was organized in Mysuru on Wednesday to commemorate legendary playback singer S. Janaki, who passed away here recently.

Music composers, singers, supporters, fans and family members of S. Janaki attended the event – ​​S. Janaki Namana where the iconic singer was remembered with a tribute highlighting her immense contribution to Indian music.

On the occasion, noted music composer Hamsalekha announced that a memorial S. Janaki Dhyana Mantapa — along with a music study center would be established in Mysuru. The project, estimated to cost ₹10-15 crore, is expected to be completed within the next two years.

“In two years, all roads for music lovers and musicians will lead to Mysuru,” Mr. Hamsalekha said.

Hamsalekha, for whom the legendary singer rendered several memorable Kannada songs, recalled S. Janaki’s lasting legacy and said her countless admirers were determined to preserve her memory through a memorial.

He said funds for the project will be mobilized through contributions from her fans, musicians and well-wishers. As an initial contribution, Musicians Association donates ₹5,000 and another ₹5,000 from Raj Events.

“The project requires considerable financial support, but we are confident of receiving contributions from S. Janaki’s fans and the music fraternity,” he said.

Mr. Hamsalekha added that the detailed plan of the project and other aspects of the memorial would be announced later. “Our aim is to create a center where music flourishes and people from all over the world come to celebrate the legacy of S. Janaki and the art of music,” he said.

Veteran actress Bharati Vishnuvardhan, former minister SR Mahesh, family members of S. Janaki and people who were her guardians in Mysuru and others attended the programme.
