India head into their final qualifier for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Kochi on March 31, with little left to play for in terms of qualification, but the occasion has significance beyond the standings. When the campaign is already derailed, attention shifts to signs of change and One such indicator could be Williams’ inclusion.
Speaking to Sportstar ahead of his highly-anticipated debut, Williams reflected on his journey to donning the Blue Tigers jersey and realizing his dream.
“There were two kinds of relief. The first was to get the Indian passport in hand, which took much longer than we would have liked, and then to be able to play straight away,” he said.
“As long as I’m fit and playing well – scoring goals, assisting and making changes in the team – any chance I get to wear the Indian jersey I’ll take it… I just don’t know how many people would be willing to give up their passports to come and play. If there was a dual (passport) thing or you could play with an OCI card,” he added.
Williams’ path to the national team was anything but straightforward. Having previously represented Australia, he renounced his citizenship to become eligible for India due to his Anglo-Indian roots, a rare and symbolic move that reflects both personal commitment and structural gaps in Indian football’s eligibility framework.
WHY WAS RYAN WILLIAMS’ DEBUT POSTPONED?
Williams’ journey to the Indian national team was far from easy.
The Perth-born 32-year-old qualified through his maternal roots and completed his citizenship process at the end of 2025. However, his debut was delayed due to pending FIFA approval and a No Objection Certificate from Football Australia, preventing him from being registered in time. Earlier match India vs Bangladesh.
He was part of the national camp and even traveled with the team, but due to delays in documentation, he missed out on match day inclusion. Now fit and available, Williams is ready to finally make his competitive debut.
With experience in English football, including spells at Fulham and Portsmouth, along with stints in Australia and India with Bengaluru FC, Williams brings a different profile to the Indian attack.
WHAT DOES INDIA VS HONG KONG MEAN TO JAMIL?
For head coach Khalid Jamil, the match is less about points and more about faith to save.
“It’s a very important game for us,” Jamil said at the pre-match press conference.
“We must not take it lightly. We are ready for this match and we need your support, especially this time. We should not think too much about the past. Even if we are out, we want to finish well.”
India have to finish bottom of the group and are still looking for their first win of the campaign. In this context, avoiding a winless run becomes a key goal, even in what is otherwise insignificant.
However, the background was far from ideal. After that, the team’s preparations were interrupted Jamil and the players were briefly denied entry to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi due to administrative matters, underscoring the off-field chaos that has overshadowed the campaign.
Beyond the immediate result, this match could also signal the start of a wider transition.
The likes of Lalengmawia Ralte, who impressed at club level, are expected to step up in the absence of key names, while the likes of Sahal Abdul Samad and Ashique Kuruniyan remain central to India’s attacking plans.
Still, for all the talk of change, the squad largely mirrors the one that struggled during qualifying. This raises familiar questions about risk-taking and long-term planning, especially in a match where experimentation might be more freely embraced.
