On Tuesday (September 23), the federal jury condemned Ryan Routha (59) for all accusations in connection with the alleged attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump on his golf course in Florida last year.
After two hours of thinking, the jury of five men and seven women found that Ryan Routh was guilty of trying to assassinate the chief presidential candidate who had a firearm to support violent crime, attacked a federal officer and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. He was also convicted of the ownership of a firearm with a smoothed serial number.
Plot against Trump
The prosecutors said Routh spent weeks planning Trump before heading through the bushes when the Republican presidential candidate played Golf 15 September 2024 at his country club West Palm Beach.
The secret service agent testified that he saw Routha before Trump learned. Routh reportedly pointed his rifle at the agent, who first fired, forced Routha to drop the weapon and escape. Shortly thereafter, he was captured with the help of a witness who saw him running from the scene.
Routh’s defense
Routh, who was represented in court, claimed that he never intended to kill Trump or anyone else.
“It is difficult for me to believe that there has been a crime if the trigger never pulled,” he told the jurors during the final arguments. He added that he could fire at Trump or Secret Service agents, but he decided not.
Unlike the seven -day presentation of prosecution with 38 witnesses, he called only three witnesses.
Routh also confessed that he was not guilty to separate state charges of terrorism and attempt to murder. His conviction at federal beliefs is expected in the coming months.
Rejoice
The Pam Bondi Prosecutor General told the judgment and said it was reflected in the commitment of the Ministry of Justice “to punish those involved in political violence”.
“This assassination attempt was not only an attack on our president, but also an insult to our nation itself,” Bondi said in his statement of X.
Background
Routh, a former building worker from North Carolina, who later moved to Hawaii, has a lengthy criminal record.
In 2002 he was arrested in Greensboro, NC for escaping the police and barricading a fully automatic machine gun and explosive equipment.
In 2010, the police found more than 100 stolen items, including kayaks and spa baths in the warehouse.
In both cases he received probation or suspended punishments.
Routh also gained attention in 2022 when he tried to hire fighters from Afghanistan, Moldova and Tai -wan to fight Russian forces in Ukraine.
The case came only a few weeks after Trump had just survived another attempt to assassinate the Butler in Pennsylvania, where the shooter fired eight shots and grazed his ear before being killed by a secret service snipe.
