Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit an official visit in India in December, said Kremlin on Friday (August 29, 2025) because the links between countries are growing closer and after the United States has placed tariffs on new Delhi for purchases of Russian oil.
Mr. Putin will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modim at the Regional Summit in China on Monday (September 1, 2025).
US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Indian goods as a punishment for massive purchases of Russian oil of the new Delhi, a part of the campaign that pushes Moscow to end her offensive in Ukraine.
Energy income is a key source of income for the state budget of Moscow.
Russia is also one of the best Indian weapons suppliers and warm ties between the two countries reach into the Soviet era.
Western Allies of Ukraine have tried to reduce Russian export earnings since Moscow launched its military attack in February 2022.
However, Russia has been able to redirect energy sales from Europe to countries, including India and China, ensuring that the flow of funds worth several billion dollars continued.
India claimed that she was importing oil “from Russia, because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.
Mr. Putin significantly reduced his foreign travel in the middle of the offensive in Ukraine, for which he was slapped by the arrested order of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
India is not a party to ICC and is therefore not obliged to retain Mr. Putin.
