Moscow, August 5 (PTI), Russia said on Tuesday that the rule of countries have the right to select their partners in business and economic cooperation on the basis of their interests, the day after President Donald Trump threatened to “basically” increase US tariffs in India for buying Russian oil.
“We believe that sovereign countries must have and have the right to select their business partners, partners in business and economic cooperation, themselves and independently determine these ways of trade and economic cooperation that comply with the interests of the country in question,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to comment on American threats.
President Trump said on Monday that “substantially” will increase US tariffs to India and accuse it of buying a massive amount of Russian oil and its sales for big profits.
A few hours later, India mounted an unusually sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their “unfounded and disproportionate” focus on the new Delhi for Russian oil contract.
India firmly rejected criticism and pointed out the double standards that focus on this matter, and said that the US and the EU were continuing their business relations with Russia.
“Unlike our case, such a trade is not a vital national donut,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
The European-Russian trade includes not only energy but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment, Mea said.
“As far as the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russian uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, Palladium for its industry EV, fertilizers and chemicals,” he added.
“In this background, India’s targeting is unfounded and disproportionate. Like any main economy, India will take all the necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security,” Mea said.
On Monday, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakahrov, accused the US administration of continuing non -Kolonial policy against the nations of the global south to maintain American hegemony.
“Sanctions and restrictions are a regrettable reality of today’s historical phase that affects the world,” Zpahara said in a statement.
“Washington cannot cope with the loss of hegemony in the developing multipolar world order and continues to carry out non -cocolnon policy in an effort to maintain its position using the politicized economic pressure levers to those who refuse to follow side in the international scene,” she added.
Trump previously announced 25 % of the import of Indian goods, along with an unspecified “fine” for the purchase of the “large majority” of Russian military equipment and oil.
