The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finally cracked West Bengal after years of threatening to defeat All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). As of 8:00 PM on Monday (May 4, 2026), the ruling party at the Center has won 102 of the 294 Assembly seats in the state and is leading in another 104, making it 206, more than two-thirds of the Assembly, ousting Mamata Banerjee’s AITC to a distant 81 and leading by 34 more with 44 wins.
The BJP did this by improving its vote share by almost seven percentage points compared to 2021, taking 44.8%, almost three points more than the TMC’s (in coalition with BGPM from Darjeeling region) 41.9%. The Left Front-led alliance registered a presence with 3 seats and 6.4% vote share, its first non-zero number of seats in the state since 2016, if the leadership is retained. Congress is empty for now.
