The state government has notified the Tamil Nadu Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026, which specify the procedures to be followed for the registration of Anand marriages performed in the state.
Anand marriages are conducted according to Sikh wedding ceremonies, commonly known as Anand Karaj.
The District Registrar concerned would be the District Registrar of Marriages Anand and the authorized sub-registrar would be the Registrar of Marriages Anand within his/her jurisdiction.
These marriages must be registered with the registrar in whose jurisdiction they took place. The parties to the marriage are obliged to submit to the registry office a form with documents on the conclusion of the marriage and the signatures of the witnesses and to register their marriage within 30 days of its conclusion. Even those parties to the marriage who have not registered their marriage within the specified period can register their marriage.
After verifying and examining the memorandum and documents, the registrar would enter the details of the marriage in the registry and issue an Anand marriage certificate in Form IV. If there are reasons to believe that the marriage was not performed in accordance with the Anand marriage ceremony, the parties may be asked to submit additional information.
“The registrar may, for reasons to be recorded in writing, refuse to register a marriage if the parties do not comply with the instructions he has issued,” according to the rules.
