Former football star Dimitar Berbatov has voiced his opinion on Ruben Amorim’s coaching approach, suggesting the Sporting Lisbon manager needs to adapt his tactics. Speaking to The Mirror, Berbatov expressed admiration for Amorim’s commitment to his principles but emphasized the need for flexibility.
“I admire his approach and his determination to stick to his style of play, but I think he needs to shuffle things a bit,” Berbatov said. “Maybe try something different once and see how the players respond. The current system isn’t producing the football everyone expects.”
Berbatov pointed out that Amorim’s tactics aren’t yielding the desired results, even by the manager’s own standards. “I’m sure he’s not getting the football he’s expecting either,” he added. “So why not try to change things until the end of the season and aim to climb as high as possible in the table?”
He went on to explain how a tactical shift could provide peace of mind for Amorim and the team. “By trying something new, you might unlock more potential in your players. It’s about giving yourself the comfort of knowing you’ve done everything to finish the season positively, rather than fighting for survival. It’s unbelievable to even be saying this, but it could make a real difference.”

Berbatov’s Plea to Amorim
Berbatov’s comments come as Sporting Lisbon faces a challenging season. The former Manchester United striker believes Amorim’s reluctance to adapt could be holding the team back.
“It’s remarkable to think about, but a small change could have a big impact,” Berbatov said. “Amorim needs to consider tweaking his approach to get the most out of his squad.”
