Ruben Amorim Emphasizes Immediate Focus on Europa League Clash with Real Sociedad
Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim has stressed the importance of shifting focus to their upcoming Europa League last 16 encounter against Real Sociedad following their FA Cup exit. The Red Devils were knocked out of the competition on Sunday after a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, with Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee missing crucial spot-kicks.
The match at Old Trafford saw United fall behind early when Calvin Bassey scored from a corner, but Bruno Fernandes equalized with a superb low finish. Despite creating chances, United struggled to convert them into clear opportunities, and Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s standout performance ensured the Cottagers progressed.
This latest setback adds to a challenging season for Amorim and his squad, who now face the prospect of qualifying for European competition next season solely by winning the Europa League. Victory in the tournament would secure a spot in the Champions League, offering a silver lining despite United’s poor domestic form.
Speaking after the match, Amorim highlighted the need for recovery and preparation ahead of the crucial tie against Real Sociedad.
"It’s really important to focus on the upcoming clash. We have to recover the players and push those who are out," he said. "As you saw today, they were really tired. We have a lot of recovery work to be ready for the game."
Amorim acknowledged improvements in the team’s performance but emphasized the importance of turning progress into results.
"I think we are improving. The players are more confident in possession and positioning," he continued. "But we need to win games to build confidence. Maintaining our ideas is crucial—we reinforce them daily through videos and training, using every session and match to improve. We must focus on our objectives."
Amorim also explained his approach to boosting player morale, preferring practical preparation over empty encouragement.
"The only way I know how to help my players is not by using kind words but by focusing on the next game and the characteristics of our opponents," he said. "We need to evaluate this match and move forward. Winning is the only way to gain confidence. So, let’s concentrate on the next challenge."
United will travel to San Sebastian for the first leg on Thursday, followed by the return fixture at Old Trafford a week later. The second leg comes just four days after a high-stakes Premier League clash against Arsenal at home.
