Bharatiya Kisan Sangh – an agricultural body associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) – welcomed the recent decision of Niti Aayog to download a working document, which should reduce import tariffs on agricultural production from the US, including genetically modified Soy and corn crops.
The Secretary General of BKS Mohini Mohan Misra described the paper as an anti-farmer and anti-aconist. “This document was widely criticized by various organizations of farmers, including BKS. After our strong response, the paper was removed from the Niti Aayog website,” Misra said.
The Aayog Niti is a Think-Tank of the Union Government and offers proposals for various political issues. The contribution entitled “Promotion of Agricultural Trade in India-USA in the new US business system” concerned the proposed agreement on the free trade Indo-USA (FTA). It was released last month, but was recently removed from the institution’s website.
“We’re not guinea pigs”
“The contribution of Niti Aayog has proposed imports of soy oil GM, GM soy seeds and GM corn along with other dairy products from America. The contribution also proposed to reduce the imports of these products from the US, which were recommended, even if it is recommended.
Mr. Misra said that the Aayog Niti, who would kill the recommendation of the Think Tank, should first try these crops first and check the results.
“Aayog should not consider farmers and consumers to be guinea pigs or rats. Previously, in the name of the Green Revolution, farmers were administered to farmers in the effort to make higher production and now farmers are accused of cancer caused by these chemicals.
Threatened
The BKS leader pointed out that GM products to the Indian agricultural sector under US pressure could endanger the living of about 70 Indians of Crore. In countries like America, farmers receive huge subsidies and production costs are low, he said.
“In such a situation, India farmers cannot compete with them. Aayog has so far been taken away from farmers when the Niti’s work document has been taken away. We welcome this decision of Niti Aayog,” Misra said.
