Hyderabad DCP (South East) S. Chaitanya Kumar opened fire with his gunmen’s service pistol on a buzz sheet involved in mobile phone theft cases after a suspect allegedly tried to attack a police constable with a knife at the Victory Ground in Chaderghat on Saturday (October 25) evening. The perpetrator sustained gunshot wounds to his hand and abdomen and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said that around 5 pm, the DCP and his gunner Murty were passing through the area when they spotted the suspect, later identified as Mohd. Omar Ansari, who tried to escape after allegedly snatching the phone. “When the policemen tried to arrest him, Ansari attacked one of the constables with a knife, prompting the DCP to fire two shots from the gunman’s pistol to prevent him from injuring the policeman,” the officer said.
In the ensuing commotion, the DCP and his gunmen also sustained minor injuries. “They were also taken to a private hospital for medical treatment. Their condition is stable. Meanwhile, another man who was accompanying Ansari managed to flee from the spot,” said the city police commissioner.
Police said Ansari, a resident of Kamatipura, is a known rowdy with a record at Kalapather police station. He has been involved in 20 crimes, including extortion and property crimes, and is known to use weapons in his activities. The Preventive Detention Act has been applied against him twice in the past.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Ansari may have visited the ground to plan another offense when the DCP and his team were spotted passing through the area. The police deployed special teams to trace his associate, who fled the scene.
Officials said the DCP’s action was taken under compelling circumstances to protect his team from harm. A CLUES team was deployed to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify the details of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Chaderghat police have charged Ansari and his accomplices with stealing a mobile phone and assaulting a public official.
