Ronaldo wanted Portugal back despite disciplinary action for leaving the camp

Portugal want Cristiano Ronaldo back in the national team despite opening disciplinary proceedings against the veteran after he left the team’s camp ahead of their Nations League game against Denmark.

This was confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). disciplinary proceedings are being conducted against the 41-year-old, who left the team’s base in Copenhagen last week after a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

However, FPF president Pedro Proenca has indicated that there is a collective desire within the national team set-up to welcome Ronaldo back once the matter is resolved. The independent disciplinary commission of the federation will decide on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings.

PORTUGAL WANTS RONALDO BACK

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the FPF has confirmed that proceedings have been opened against Ronaldo and that the case has been granted emergency status.

“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive ban he was subject to until the kick-off date, a non-automatic preventive ban has been decided on the player and the proceedings have been given urgent status,” the federation quoted the federation as saying.

Despite the disciplinary proceedings, Proenca stressed that the federation, coaching staff and players all wanted the captain to return to the national team.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and its president, in this spirit of calm, are talking to all the parties that have already publicly demonstrated their desire to have the captain back with us, they have all expressed their wishes,” Proenca said, according to A Bola.

“This includes the federation, the FPF president, the national team coach, the captain and the players.

Proenca also made it clear that the federation’s leadership would not determine the punishment, leaving that responsibility to an independent disciplinary body.

“That will depend only on the Disciplinary Commission, which is an autonomous body, and it will do its job,” he added.

RIP WITH JESUS

Ronaldo’s departure he came after going unused in Portugal’s game against Norway. The striker reportedly accused Jesus of twice breaking his word regarding his role in the team, leading to tension between the two.

Portugal secured a 2-1 victory, with Jesus denying any deal for the player. But the coach left the door open for Ronaldo’s return.

The episode has raised questions about Ronaldo’s immediate future with the national team, although recent comments from the federation suggest his relationship with Portugal’s wider squad has not been irreparably damaged.

RONALDO APOLOGIZES

Ronaldo addressed the controversy on Tuesday, apologizing for not acknowledging supporters and abandoning his teammates after the Norway game.

The veteran forward also reconfirmed his availability for the national team and said he would remain ready to represent Portugal after serving any punishment stemming from the incident.

As the disciplinary proceedings are still ongoing, Ronaldo’s return will depend on the commission’s decision. For now, Portugal’s public stance is clear: the federation wants its captain back, even as it allows the disciplinary proceedings to proceed.
