Roland Garros introduces new faces outside Alcaraz, Sinner as U21 trio script history

The 2026 French Open turned into a showcase for the new generation of men’s tennis, with three players under the age of 21 reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time this century. Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, Czech Jakub Mensik and Spaniard Rafael Jodar secured a place in the round of 16 at Roland Garros, underscoring a major shift in the sport’s landscape.

The achievement is particularly significant as it marks the first time since the 2005 French Open that three men aged 20 or younger have reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament. More than two decades ago, a teenage Rafael Nadal led a new wave of young stars in Paris. 21 years later, another group of teenagers announced their arrival on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Fonseca and Jodar became just the 12th pair of teenagers to reach the men’s quarterfinals at the same Grand Slam in the Open Era. Notably, no two teenagers have ever reached the men’s singles semifinals at the same Grand Slam during the Open Era.

DJOKOVIC-SLAYER STILL EXCITES FONSECA

Fonseca became one of the breakout stars of the tournament. The 19-year-old Brazilian stunned Novak Djokovic in the third round before defeating two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in four sets to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final. Widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in men’s tennis, Fonseca impressed with his fearless shooting and composure under pressure.

The 20-year-old Mensik continued his rapid rise with a series of impressive performances in Paris. The Czech youngster fought his way past Andrey Rublev in a grueling five-set battle to reach the quarterfinals of a major for the first time in his career. His strong serve and aggressive ground game have made him one of the most exciting young players on the ATP Tour.

JODAR CONTINUES HIS DREAM RUN

Jodar dramatically completed the teenage trio. The Spaniard recovered from two sets down against former world number 10 Pablo Carreno Busta to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to book a quarter-final clash with Alexander Zverev. The comeback win further enhanced the 19-year-old’s growing reputation as one of the best young clay players in the game.

Their success reflects the changing era of men’s tennis. With defending champion Carlos Alcaraz missing the tournament due to injury and several established stars leaving early, the door has been opened for younger players to make a statement.

Fonseca, Mensik and Jodar seized the opportunity to ensure that the 2026 French Open will be remembered as the tournament where a new generation truly arrived on the Grand Slam scene.
