Karnataka Minister HK Patil said the state cabinet discussed key laws, including the proposed Rohith Vemula Bill and the Honor Killing Bill, and decided to seek further input before taking them forward.
After a cabinet meeting on Thursday (26 February 2026), the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs said the proposed legislation had been scrutinized and certain aspects required further consultation with the Home Office.
“The Karnataka Freedom of Choice in Marriage and Prevention and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honor and Tradition Bill, 2026 was discussed in the cabinet. As some aspects require the opinion of the home ministry, it has been returned to it and will be brought before the next cabinet meeting. It is related to human rights,” the minister said.
He said the Cabinet also discussed the Karnataka Rohith Vemula Right to Education and Dignity (Prevention of Exclusion or Injustice) Bill, 2026.
“The Rohith Vemula bill was also discussed today. After getting certain inputs from the home ministry, it will be tabled for finalization before the next cabinet meeting,” Patil said.
When asked whether the Rohith Vemula Bill will only apply to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes or will it include Other Backward Classes, Patil said, “We will discuss the matter when it comes to you as an approved bill.”
Patil reiterated that both the Rohith Vemula Bill and the Honor Killing Bill would be brought back to the government after receiving the views of the Home Ministry, indicating that the government intends to move forward after due consultations are completed.
