Former India captain Rohit Sharma, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube have not been named in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad in Mumbai, according to a Times Of India report. But that doesn’t mean all four men will end up missing the one-day tournament, which starts on December 24. The team will be captained by Shardul Thakur during the campaign.
Jaiswal was hospitalized in Pune following a bout of gastroenteritis after Mumbai’s last Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Rajasthan. The Mumbai selectors have clarified that all the international stars will be included in the side as soon as their availability is confirmed. The BCCI has made it mandatory for all national players take part in at least two VHT games during the gap between the end of the South Africa T20Is and the start of the New Zealand tour.
“All these Indian players will be accommodated in the Mumbai squad when they are available. If they are not available, it is not right to name them in the squad and deprive the youngster of a place in the team,” Mumbai senior selection committee chairman Sanjay Patil told TOI.
Talking about Jaiswal’s inclusion, Patil said the opener will be brought in once he gets clearance from the medical team.
“He will be included in the Mumbai team once he gets clearance from the medical team,” Patil added.
Jaiswal shared a post on social media informing that he is recovering from the illness. Dube and Suryakumar are currently part of the Indian squad to face South Africa in the five-match T20I series. They will be in action again next month when New Zealand arrive on Indian shores for a five-match T20I series ahead of the World Cup.
