Rohit Sharma (Image credit: BCCI/IPL) NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma does not miss any training session with the Mumbai Indians team. In the nets on Friday afternoon at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, he put his head down and mostly worked on perfecting his defensive technique. He refrained from thunderous strikes on the ground.Rohit is 26 days short of turning 39, but the 15 kg he has shed makes him look younger, almost unrecognizable. It is clear that he is tasked with proving his worth as an international cricketer even as he faces constant scrutiny over his place in India’s ODI World Cup 2027 squad. The journey began with candid talks with the Mumbai Indians management last year.

Ajinkya Rahane press conference: KKR skipper backs bowlers, hits back at SR critics“He had a clear plan for his fitness. Some members of our squad joined his training and he worked to reach a level he was happy with,” Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said on Friday.“Even though he hasn’t played much competitive cricket, he has done a lot of skill work in the off-season. He joined us from the first day of the camp and we discussed how to start. We did some simulations and practice matches. For someone with his experience, muscle memory and situational understanding is very important,” he added. One of the main concerns surrounding him is the lack of cricket he has been playing for around a year after retiring from Tests and T20Is. He allayed those fears with an explosive 38-ball 78 in MI’s opener against KKR.“Rohit’s case was a bit different because he didn’t play much cricket. He focused on his fitness for a few months and then continued to work on his skills. Since he was in Mumbai, he has used our facilities whenever possible but he pretty much knows what works best for him. He has remained focused and relaxed and his presence has been very positive for the group. When I watched him in the nets, he looked great. The real test of Rohit’s stamina, ability and fitness will be judged by his consistency in runs and runs throughout the long IPL season.
