Former India captain Rohit Sharma is yet to inform the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament.
The competition will be held in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jaipur and Bengaluru from December 25 to January 18, with the knockout matches scheduled at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
A senior MCA official confirmed to PTI that the board has not received any communication from the Indian ODI captain.
“As far as I know, there has been no communication,” the official said.
Earlier reports indicated this Rohit expressed his willingness to represent Mumbai in the tournament, though Virat Kohli’s participation in Delhi remains uncertain.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly informed the two senior players that they would have to feature in domestic competitions to remain in contention for future ODI selection.
Rohit was in great form during India’s recent ODI series against Australia, scoring an unbeaten 121 in the last match after a 73-run knock in the second match. Although India lost the series 1–2, he was named player of the series.
Meanwhile, the opener trains regularly at MCA’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. He was also joined by young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal before leaving for the Indian Test squad for the upcoming series against South Africa in Kolkata.
Both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test and T20I cricket but are expected to be part of India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against South Africa from November 30 in Ranchi. The remaining matches are scheduled in Raipur (December 3) and Visakhapatnam (December 6).
Rohit Sharma retained the top spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings with 781 after a stellar series against Australia while Virat Kohli bounced back with a gritty 74. Shubman Gill took the fourth spot and kept India’s batting dominance intact.
