Road widening work was underway along the highway when the rock fall occurred. Local residents noted that several large rocks along the road continued to pose a risk of rock falls.
Authorities have launched operations to remove boulders and debris from the road.
The Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway is one of the main routes connecting travelers to the popular hill station.
This incident occurred shortly after a major mudslide hit the same highway near the Old Munnar CSI Church, where a major crack formed in the road leading to disruption of traffic for almost a week.
