Roads in Hyderabad waterlogged, traffic hit as heavy rain coincides with Ganesh onslaught

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Hyderabad on Saturday evening after days of hot and humid weather, causing waterlogging and disrupting traffic at several places across the city. The rain also added to the weekend rush as a large number of devotees visited the Ganesh pandals, especially in Khairatabad and Begum Bazaar.

The city, which witnessed clear and sunny conditions during the morning, turned cloudy after noon and after 4:00 pm rainfall started in several areas.

Waterlogging and slow traffic were reported at Shaikpet Flyover, Manikonda-Tolichowki towards Gachibowli, Iqbal Minar Road towards Secretariat, NMDC towards Masab Tank, Banjara Hills Road No. 12 at Agrasen Statue towards Omega Hospital, Shivrampally, Rajendranagar, N Aramghar and Nathinapur towards BX Bandlaguda Road.

The rain further affected traffic in areas that witnessed heavy footfall for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. With a large number of devotees visiting the Khairatabad Ganesh idol, congestion was reported in Lakdi-ka-pul, Somajiguda and surrounding areas.

Traffic was also slow around Begum Bazaar, where devotees visited the Ganesh pandal amid traffic jams on the narrow roads. Vehicles were moving slowly along Malakunta Road and Begum Bazaar Chatri towards MJ Bridge on both sides.

Traffic police personnel from Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates along with Disaster Response Force (DRF) from Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were deployed at major intersections across the city to remove waterlogging and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data, Nagole received 63.3 mm of rainfall, followed by Shamshabad with 59.5 mm, Sivarampally with 44.5 mm, Rajendranagar with 44.5 mm, Attapur with 40.8 mm, Shaikpet with 31.3 mm, Shaikpet with 29 mm and Shaikpet with 29.8 mm, Vanasthalipuram with 24.3 mm. 23.5 mm, Hayathnagar got 23.5 mm and Khairatabad got 20.5 mm.

The rain also affected flight traffic at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), two flights were diverted. According to FlightRadar24, IndiGo flight 6E 6063 from Shirdi was diverted to Vijayawada, while IndiGo flight 6E 1182 from Colombo was diverted to Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, several parts of the city received no rain and remained largely dry.
