Rishad Hossain produced a record performance to lead Bangladesh to a comprehensive 74-run victory over West Indies in the first ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday. The young leg-spinner returned stunning figures of 6 for 35 – the best ever by a Bangladeshi spinner in ODIs – to surpass Taijul Islam’s 5 for 28 against the same opponents in 2022.
Rishad’s match win also made him only the third Bangladesh bowler after Mashrafe Mortaza, Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman to take six wickets in men’s ODIs.
Rishad’s brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award, capping off an all-round show that included a quickfire 26 off just 13 balls earlier in the innings. His two sixes in the final overs lifted Bangladesh to 207 after the hosts struggled to gain momentum for most of their innings. The Tigers also took a vital 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
Bangladesh vs West Indies 1st ODI Highlights
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh endured a shaky start, slipping to 8 for 2 before recovering thanks to the efforts of Towhid Hridoy (51 off 90 balls) and debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon (46). Hridoy reached his fifty from 87 deliveries, anchoring the innings with patience and control, while Mahidul looked poised on his first ODI outing as he stitched together a crucial 70-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (32) provided early stability before taking charge of the middle order. However, regular wickets in the closing overs prevented Bangladesh from getting past 220. Roston Chase (2/30) and Justin Greaves (2/32) took wickets for the visitors, while Khary Pierre’s 1/19 from 10 overs stood out for his accuracy.
In response, West Indies looked steady at 79 for 2 with Brandon King (44) and Alick Athanaz (27) leading the chase, but the innings fell apart dramatically once Rishad came into the attack. Using flight and sharp turn, he dismantled the middle order, removing King, Rutherford, Chase and Seales to seal the contest.
Supported by Mustafizur Rahman (2/16) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1/16), Bangladesh bowled out West Indies for 133 in 39 overs.
