Born in Blackheath, London
Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950 in Blackheath, London and started his first business at a very young age. His father, Edward James Branson, while his mother, Evette Huntley Branson, was a ballet dancer and flight attendant. At the age of 16, he started his entrepreneurial journey with the magazine Student. At the age of 20, he started a record mail order business.
In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores called Virgin Records, which later became known as Virgin Megastores. In the 1980s, his Virgin brand was aggressively mined with the introduction of the Virgin Atlantic airline and the expansion of the Virgin Records music label. During the privatization of British Rail in 1997, he formed the Virgin Rail Group to bid for passenger rail franchises.
He took on an even bigger project in 2004 when he founded Virgin Galactic, a space tourism company based at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, United States. He is widely recognized for the suborbital space plane SpaceShipTwo.
The British government recognized Richard Branson’s remarkable business talent and awarded him an honorary Knight Bachelor in March 2000 for his “services to business”. In 1993 Loughborough University awarded Branson an honorary Doctor of Technology degree.
