Revised Kerala Budget: ₹ 50 crore earmarked for setting up Tribal University in Wayanad

The Kerala government’s revised budget for 2026-27, presented on Friday (June 19, 2026), announced a number of projects and allocations to boost higher education, health, infrastructure, tourism and tribal development in Wayanad district.

The major highlight of the budget is the proposal to set up a tribal university and tribal knowledge zone in Wayanad. The project, which is planned as a hub for higher education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship among tribal communities, was initially allocated ₹50 crore. It will focus on indigenous studies, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and future-ready skills development.

“The tribal study center would help showcase the culture and heritage of the tribal communities at the national level and preserve their traditional knowledge,” said Biju Kakkathode, a prominent tribal activist.

The budget proposes to introduce the concept of ‘Brand Wayanad’ as part of the state’s efforts to promote environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. The initiative aims to strengthen community tourism and create new opportunities for local livelihoods while preserving the ecological character of the district.

Reiterating its commitment to the development of the district, the UDF government announced the continuation of the Wayanad Development Package with emphasis on education, healthcare, livelihood generation and measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. The budget noted that efforts would be made to expedite projects under the package.

In the higher education sector, ₹ 2 crore has been earmarked for the initial steps to establish a Government Arts and Science College in the Sulthan Bathery Assembly constituency. Another ₹ 2 crore has been allocated for preliminary works related to the proposed Nilambur-Nanjangud railway project under the Wayanad package. “The allocation of funds is set to give a new lease of life to the railway project which has been on hold for the last ten years,” said TM Rasheed, Convener, Nilgiri-Wayanad NH and Railway Action Committee.

The budget also acknowledged the infrastructural deficiencies at the Government Medical College, Wayanad. The institution was included in a larger program that earmarked ₹100 crore to improve infrastructure, equipment and staff at four underperforming medical colleges in the state.
