Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to deal with the potential impact of El Nino on the state, warning that failure to anticipate the emerging crisis could lead to serious problems in the coming months.

At a review meeting with senior officials on Saturday (October 10), the chief minister discussed the preparedness needed to address potential problems in drinking water supply, irrigation, agriculture and electricity. He called for precautionary measures to mitigate the impact and asked officials to create awareness among the people, from the village level to the state level.

He warned of a possible worsening of the energy situation and said that the government is ready to spend whatever it takes to procure the electricity required by the state. However, electricity was not readily available in the market, so it was necessary to conserve available energy. He asked officials to explore measures to temporarily suspend electricity-dependent activities whenever possible.

The Chief Minister also called for campaigns to raise public awareness about the possible effects of El Niño through cinemas, media, cultural ensembles and other communication channels.

Mr. Revanth Reddy said that a special meeting with the ministers would be convened soon to discuss the impact of El Niño and lack of rainfall, assess the difficulties faced by farmers and decide on immediate measures.

He recalled that the state government had passed a resolution in the assembly seeking help from the center in view of the lack of rainfall in nearly 215 mandals. The government has also asked for a special package of ₹20,000 crore and asked the Center to declare drought-affected mandals and provide adequate financial assistance.

The Chief Minister asked the officials to continue the requirement of additional 50 days of employment under the VB-G RAM G scheme over and above the 125 days of employment stipulated under the scheme. He said the state government was ready to provide additional days of employment and that the possibility of setting up an all-party committee would be discussed at the proposed ministerial meeting.

A war room and a toll-free helpline should be set up to constantly monitor the situation and respond to public concerns, he said. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Director General of Police CV Anand, Government Advisor Ramakrishna Rao, MP Vem Narender Reddy and other senior officials.
