The inhabitants of the village of Malali in Holenarasipur Taluk from the Hassan district in Karnataka on Wednesday organized a protest against the construction of alcohol trade in the village.
The inhabitants, including many women, gathered in front of the Gram Panchayat office after learning that there was a meeting to approve the application for the construction of the liqueur in the village. They raised slogans against the sale of liqueur in the village and demanded that the construction of the store stop.
The village of Malali is known for the Lakshmidevi temple, where they regularly visit devoted from different places. The inhabitants said that the village was calm without alcohol store. Many villagers, especially women, remembered that they had successfully protested against the establishment of alcohol trade years ago. This time they would do it again, they said.
“Women and children will suffer if liqueur is sold in the village. We will fight against it. If the officers concerned do not listen to us, we will set an indeterminate protest before the Commissioner deputy in Hassan,” said Sundaramma, an older woman who attended the protest.
Bhagyamma, Jayamma, Jagadish and Suresh were among many who participated in the protest.
