Villagers of Kalliyur, Madapallam and Malripatti protested against the proposed quarry along the Tamil Nadu – Andhra Pradesh border in Tirupattur.

Residents said preparatory work on the proposed quarry in Thengal village near Kalliyur has been going on for the past few weeks. Since the beginning of the work, residents have been vigilant against any attempt to operate a new quarry at the foot of the village.

They demanded the scrapping of the proposed quarry project due to its adverse impact on agricultural land, water bodies and village infrastructure such as roads and water pipes. “Most of the residents in the affected villages are farmers who depend on groundwater for irrigation. The proposed quarry will not only affect groundwater but also basic infrastructure like panchayat roads and water pipes. We have also recently petitioned the District Collector in this regard,” resident R. Sugumar said.

Located near the Palar River, Kaliyur is a sprawling agricultural village with an average cultivated area of ​​1200 acres. The village had around 3,000 voters who depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Farmers depend on two lakes and several ponds. AND

TNPCB officials said that currently around 100 quarries, mostly stone quarries, are functioning in the district. Most of the quarries were located in Ambur, Kandali, Jolarpet, Natrampalli and Tirupattur which were well connected to the adjoining districts.

It was around 10 a.m. when residents in the village staged a protest against the proposed quarry. Revenue officials and Natrampalli police reached the spot to pacify the agitated residents. After being reassured by the authorities, the residents dispersed peacefully.
